Hello, Maybelline! {A Mascara Comparison}

Every time Maybelline mascaras go on sale at the drugstore, there's always one person holding a fistful and panicking/dazed/confused as to choosing which tube to buy.

I don't blame them. I've been there....which totally explains why I have 5 tubes....

I really don't know why Maybelline decides to release a new mascara practically every month (seriously man, its like they have nothing better to do each month than repackage a previously existing mascara and call it a ~new~ one)(eg. 'Falsies Flared', 'Falsies Black Drama', 'Cat Eyes Colossal' 'The Colossal Smoky Eyes'...ja feel??!?)

BUT, complaints aside, pretty much everyone agrees that Maybelline generally makes fantastic mascaras. But with a multitude of their mascaras out, how on earth does one even choose which to try????!

IT'S OK, I GOT YO' BACK. WE GON' SEE AND TEST SOME CLAIMS OF THE VOLUM' EXPRESS LINE, AITE?

The Colossal:
- "7x the volume"

The Falsies:
 - "False lash effect; More visible lashes; Fills in the gaps; Instant volume"

The Mega Plush:
- "Massive + supple volume; Mega volume, no brittle feel"

One by One:
- "Bold volume without the bulk"

The Rocket:
- "Explosive volume, even from root to tip; 6x clump-free volume"

........ooookay. What does it all mean? Because these diagrams are hella awful ಠ_ಠ

So yeah I made my own chart.
(BLOW IT UP, BLOW IT UP!)(All mascaras are waterproof)

Let's be real here. Eye charts are scary, and this chart really did remind me of this gal:
_____________________________________________________________________________

NOTES

Colossal

- I enjoy this mascara! A little length, a little volume; love how natural this appears on the lashes! (So yeah, definitely not "7x the volume" that Maybelline claims)

Falsies
- Personally not a fan of the curved shape of the wand. Makes applying mascara slightly weird for me.
- Smudges on the lower lash line, despite claims of being 'waterproof'. If you have super oily lids like me, stay awaaaaaaaaay.
- Definitely does give a 'false-lash' effect; definitely more lengthening than volumizing. I do feel like it clumps my lashes together to make them more visible/dramatic. Make sure to separate clumps after several coats with a spoolie, because it can get very clumpy.

Mega Plush
- Love how natural it appears, even after several coats.
- WAND IS AWFUL. I originally thought the Mega Plush wand would be stiff and easy to bend, but it's basically just a flimsy sham of a wand that requires more pressure to apply properly.
- Formula does smudge on lower lash line despite 'waterproof' claims. If you have super oily lids, watch out!

One by One
- Tube automatically wipes off excess mascara. So convenient, and it makes the lashes less likely to clump. Definitely "bold volume without the bulk"!

Rocket
- LOVE LOVE LOVE. The tube also automatically wipes off excess mascara, depositing minimal mascara on the lashes to add length and volume without clumping. Definitely "explosive volume from root to tip"!
- Pigmentation could be a lot better though, since it's not nearly as dark as the other mascaras.

_____________________________________________________________________________

CONCLUSION

The ones I really enjoyed include the Rocket, Colossal, and Mega Plush (despite the awful wand), because I really do enjoy the natural look. However, you can definitely build all of these for more ~thick~ and ~luscious~ lashes. Some of these waterproof formulas do smudge on my oily lids, but others have said it doesn't smudge for them, so it really depends on your own lids.

A majority of them do tend to look the same, so don't sweat if you're at the store being indecisive as to which to purchase!

Have you tried any of these mascaras? Which of Maybelline's mascaras are/is your favourite(s)? ʘ‿ʘ
Have you ever opened up 4 tubes of mascara at once?

  1. I always stand in Shoppers busting my brain out, trying to figure out which one to buy! ;o; (In the end I get scared off by the selection and opt for my regular Japanese one). I definitely like the Rocket one the best, the eye chart was really helpful LOL. I always say I'll go try out a Maybelline mascara, but never get my ass out to Shoppers. ;-; But I think I'll go pick myself up a Rocket with my new years money, hohohoho.
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! <3

  3. I actually love you so much for this post, I saw it on my bloglovin dashboard and I got SO excited!!! My favorite is the one by one because the wand is stiff and excess mascara is scraped off so there's no clumps and no mascara smudges on my eyelid.

    Happy New Year! Xx

  5. Freaking great post! Now that I see these lined up, they look sooo colorful and beautiful! Singapore has only gotten the falsies and the rocket, we never got the rest! I personally have tried the colossal and it was horrible on me, toooo natural for me and the brush was very difficult for me to get enough product on my lashes. I personally LOVE the Magnum volum express one and the falsies (brushes very similar), I totally need to try the rocket, it seems so much like the covergirl lash blast!

    1. Yupp, definitely eye catching! Shame about the Colossal for you, but then again, mascara is personal, haha.
NEVER HEARD OF MAGNUM EXPRESS, GOOGLING THAT NOW :D
I haven't tried Covergirl Lash Blast, but I've also heard that the two are similar!

  7. Super helpful and organised post! Your blogs are always so easy to read and clear. I totally get what you mean by the repackage haha, even though between some of the mascara's the difference is miniscule!!
I'm really liking the effect that rocket gives you though.

  8. This is a really good post Vanessa! I need to get my hands on the Rocket mascara as I've heard so many good things about it and your lashes look amazing with it on!

I have five mascaras on the go at the minute, oops. I have the Falsies but I don't really like it that much anymore, because like you said, clumps your lashes together! I hate removing it too!

  9. Oh man this post is so what I need. I'm the worst person at buying mascaras. I just freak out when there's too many and end up buying nothing*-* Though saying that I've been using the Lancome Doll Eyes mascara for a while and quite like it (though I got that as I gift so someone else got it for me lol). Thanks for sharing your post Vanessa, now I feel more prepared to venture to the Maybelline stands once again hehe^^ x

  10. I died at such length; That was my breaking point! The best is the little glass things with the cartoon lash drawings at CVS that you can pick up and put over your eye. As if that would give you an idea as to what your lashes are going to look like!
Great post! I should really pick up one! I've been faithful to my Covergirl and Revlon mascaras, but I'm willing to cheat on them and pick up a Maybelline one ;)

  11. Great post Nessy! (I've been waiting for this post ever since you mentioned it to me.) I absolutely adore The Falsies and The Colossal purely because I absolutely despise plastic bristles, ew god they make me cringe so hard and it really irritates my eyes. Only exception I've found is the They're Real by Benefit.
Ooh what is even all this modern technology of automatic mascara wand wiping?! Why have I never noticed this in mascaras before?
The pictures are great aswell, I'm actually mesmerized at how pretty you made the mascara's look even though I usually think the Volum' Express line has the ugliest packaging (sorry not sorry). xo

Yeah, I know what you mean about plastic bristles! I'M THE OPPOSITE, ACTUALLY. Benefit's 'They're Real' is THE most uncomfortable thing to ever touch my eye, ugh. But I really like the Rocket, even though it's got plastic bristles!

WHAT?? Idk, inside the tube, there's a piece of plastic that scrapes off all the excess mascara on the wand when you pull it out! Hard to explain, but if you pick up One by One or the Rocket, you'll understand!
      (LOL,SORRYNOTSORRY, EH)

I never buy Maybelline mascaras because they're all in the same packaging and they make SO many, and I can't help but think to myself if you'd made the perfect mascara why would you carry on making so many more? I love the look of the last one though so might give this a try! Great eye chart, so helpful. Followed your blog now x

First off THE COLOURED TUBES LOOK SO PWETTY
secondly, you're amazing for doing an eye chart! That must have taken a fair bit of determination and effort! I only own one of these, and thats the yellow one haha, and at first I didn't love it, but on the rare occasion I do opt for mascara this is the one I pick! I'd love to try the falsies though, everyone adores it and they seem to love the rocket too! once again a brilliant post :')

Yeah, everyone does rave about the Falsies and the Rocket! I think they're both either a hit or miss, haha.

  20. It is so sad but true, but your first line describes ME perfectly at the drugstore! Mascaras are my must-have eye makeup product, and I absolutely love Maybelline's line of mascaras! I didn't like the curved Falsies mascara wand either, but I adore the Colossal and One by One! The Mega Plush and Rocket are on my "next-to-try" list!

The only two that I've tried (of these) are OnebyOne and The Mega Plush. I liked OnebyOne better (my Mega Plush broke! The thing in the tube that takes off excess mascara came out! 27. This is such a helpful post. It's funny how mascaras work differently on everyone's lashes, I personally enjoy The Falsies a lot and have bought it many many times after using each one up, somehow it doesn't smudge on my lower lashes which is a plus for me. The Rocket sounds like a great mascara and I think I'll definitely try it out as I have also heard great things about it from MissGlamorazzi talk about it in her 2013 favourites. :)

    1. Agreed--everyone's lashes are different, and it always amazes me how one mascara varies in effect from one person to another! A lot of people really enjoy the Falsies (and it doesn't smudge for them), but my eyelashes + lids are too finicky for most mascaras.

Yeah, I was surprised to see it show up as a favourite from so many youtubers! (EssieButton/MissGlamorazzi)
