THE DISAPPOINTS

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a woman in possession of a holy grail beauty product must have a shit ton of disappointing products.

I'm surprised I've yet to devote a post to some of the disappointing products in my stash yet. I know some of these are cult favourites that just didn't work out for me, while some of these deserve ALLL THE SHADE!!!

(Also, the header photo for this post is kinda misleading, since I've got like, nine disappointing products here)
_______________________________________________________________________

BASE

Hourglass Mineral Veil primer ($21CDN): Wayne Goss was like "THIS IS THE BEST PRIMER EVER!!" and I was like "OK!!!1!11!1!!", and yet here it is in my disappoints stash. It does nothing for my oily skin, besides making it super sexy velvety to the touch.

I tried to do a metaphorical diagram.

This is the point where you wonder how I ever drew my header.
NARS Concealer Stick ($24CDN): My first high end purchase...EVER. Picked this up before the Creamy Radiant was released, and I had done extensive research on this before picking it up. I did manage to finish using this, but it wasn't very long lasting, was dry, and clung to dry patches.

CHEEKS

Tarte Cheek Stains ($36 for the old ones, $30 for the new): TARTE, Y U BETRAY ME? My first high end blush purchases...ever! These were my babies...until I put them on my face and found out that they remain tacky throughout the day...if they even managed to stay throughout the day. I've found that it stays on better on my dry winter skin, but in the summer when my face is super oily? lolbye.

Besides the fact that they smell amazing (citrusy), the 3 month lifespan doesn't exactly help either.

(Also, fun fact- this was the first product I ever reviewed on this blog. I gave it an overwhelmingly positive rating back then despite not liking the product...I AM ASHAME)

Benefit Cha Cha Tint ($30 full-size): While the colour for this is goooorgeous, this product stains really weird. When you dab this on your cheeks and blend, it's obvious that the initial dabs have already stained your cheeks, resulting in weird orange spots with a hard edge on your cheeks. (I MAKE IT SOUND WEIRD, I'LL HAVE A SWATCH BELOW)

Essence Metal Glam blush (Less than $5): As much as I love Essence limited edition stuff, their products are a hit or miss. This 'blush' is a sheer orange glitterbomb, which means I'll probably end up using it as a highlighter or layered on top of another summer blush.

EYES

Maybelline the Falsies ($5-7)- YEAH, I KNOW PRACTICALLY EVERYONE LOVES THIS MASCARA, OK. It just didn't do anything for my stumpy lashes...besides clump them and made me look like a sexy raccoon!

Maybelline Expert Wear eyeshadow quads ($5-7): I have two of these, one in the older packaging and another in the new packaging (pictured above), and these are definitely not expert wear. Barely any pigmentation, and I feel like my brushes are just packing glitter on my lids. No me gusta.

Biotherm Biocils eye makeup remover gel: I've had this tiny bottle for years...because it sucks. It's cold goop on the eyes that isn't even up to the task of removing non-waterproof mascara. It's like an eye makeup remover having an existential crisis. ಠ_ಠ

Behold, the worst group of swatches ever.

And there you go! It just goes to show you how some products work so well for some people, but don't necessarily yield the same results for others.

What are your disappointing products?

  1. Omg! I finally found someone who doesn't like the Maybelline Falsies, i swear everyone raves about how amazing it is but it full smudges after an hour on me :(( Girrl i know exactly how you feel!
And i thought Chacha tint was meant to be an orangey coral colour but in the swatches it looks pink o.O I really wanted to try the Tarte cheek stains but after hearing about how dissapointing they are i don't think i'll try it anymore~
    Thanks for sharing this Vanessa!
I think a dissapointing product of mine would have to be the Maybelline age rewind concealer! Clings onto dry patches like crazy :S

    1. QURL, I FEEL U. Everyone raves about the Falsies, and though it does look pretty good on their lashes, it just doesn't work out for me! Yeah, I realised that was kinda my fault, it's probably my fault that it turned out so pink.
The Tarte stains work well for certain skin types, but it just didn't work for me!
Ouu, I've heard plenty of good things about that concealer too though! Just not fan of the sponge tip--kinda unhygienic!

  2. Nooooo. Please tell me they didn't ruin the Maybelline Expert Wears when they repackaged

    1. I heard some of the quads were good, but a lot of them have weak pigmentation!

  3. I feel sorta similarly about the cha cha tint, I find it applies better to put it on my fingers than tap it in, or put it on a brush first to blend it in. I also find it doesn't actually stain too well either :S Shocking that you found the Hourglass primer bad - so many people lurve it to bits! Just goes to show that not everything works for everyone! Woooowowowow ur artistic skillz are amaze (in your header) haha :D

Yeah, my skin is just too oily for that primer to be effective! (DARN MY PORES)

      OTHX :D

  4. Ok, so I know it's bad but I'm SOO freaking glad I'm not the only person on the planet who loathes The Falsies. Ummm, excuse me Maybelline? There's no 'volum express' to be had there, honey. And arrrrrrggggg I really wanted to try the Tarte cheek stains but no WAY am I now. Do Not Want. Thank you for the entertaining, informative post as always, darlin!

I think it really depends on your skin + climate though! It just didn't work for my skin in hotter weather, but in colder weather, it's tolerable :3

    2. Girrrrl, my skin acts like it's a freaking tropical 90 degrees all year round. Ain't no way I can wear those dewy cheek stuffs :P.

    1. ITS A HG MASCARA FOR OTHER PEOPLE TOOOOO, but it just doesn't work for me 3:
I've found that most of their tints (other than benetint) stain quickly, leaving weird spots, soooo. The colour is amazing though!

  6. Too bad the Hourglass primer didn't work for you. I got a sample of it, and I love it so much I hardly dare to use it. But then, my skin is very dry, so no need for oil control. Your experience with the mascara reminds me of when I was chosen for a test panel for a l'oreal mascara that was about to be released. I loved it for a whole of 20 mins, but by the time I got to work the false-lash effect was gone, and it was just a regular old mascara. Except for the part about t migrating in flakes to the tops of my cheekbones during the day. Next thing I know everybody and their grannys are in love with the goop and I roll my eyes heavenwards while fluttering my Guerlain-coated lashes.

  7. Haha, very helpful diagram! I feel the same away about the Hourglass primer- really didn't agree with my oily skin! And I've also been skeptical of the cheek stains. Love Tarte, but figured the texture would be wonky on my skin!

Benetint is actually a good cheek stain, but Tarte? Ehhhh.

  8. I love posts like these so I know what to stay away from. For me, my biggest disappointment has been with the Revlong 16hr eyeshadow quads. Talk about chalky and no pigmentation.

  9. Oh I feel you here - so many products on my "disappointed' list and thinking about how much money I spent on it just makes me squirm smometimes. I try to find alternative uses for products that don't work for me though so that I can still realize the value of the products as much as I can!

    1. Yeah, and this stash is after I've returned other products back to Sephora too (e.g. I've returned Origins and MUFE before)
I should start finding alternative uses for some of these products too!

  10. The benefit chacha tint does look a bit weird... I tried the benetint which worked really well and had a nice natural tint. Also I've tried a version of the maybelline falsies mascara and it was very clump at the start but the application got better when I scraped most of the excess product off of the wand

    1. Yeah, I have Benetint and I really like how natural and unpatchy it applies! MAYBE I should start scraping more product off that wand. I need to make the most of it, darnit!

  11. This is like the beauty equivalent of kissing frogs to find our "princes" I usually try to do my research before I buy most things but some products still end up not working out for me like most Western BB creams. I'm just grateful that Sephora has such a great return policy. And thanks to you I now know to stay away from the Tarte Cheek Stains.

Peonies are my favorite flower as well :)

  12. I have had a bad time in general with Benefit's colored tints, I've found them all drying and sink in too quickly to apply correctly! But their highlighters are amazing so I feel like they should just tweak the formulas till they are all good!

    1. Yeah, all of them except Benetint sink in too quickly to apply correctly, which sucks because some of the shades are actually really pretty :|

  14. I had no idea you drew your header! So much talent! My first ever quad was a Maybelline Expert Wear too and I am still trying to use it up. The pigmentation is really lacking but I just can't get myself to throw it away without finishing it lol. The falsies didn't do much for me either, wrote a post on it wayy back.

    BTW, that diagram is epic.

Ahh, glad you got on with the Falsies! But then again, most people do!

  17. That diagram! I laughed because it reminded me of my doodles from my college sketchbook. :P

So, I put the Tarte Cheek Stain to the test ("Blissful"; new version) and the only thing I DIDN'T like about it was how sticky it felt on my face for the first little while. It eventually set to a less sticky finish, and I was totally blown away by its lasting-power. Morning to night (10+ hours), and the colour barely budged, yay! So, it's possible the formula has changed a little, but it still sucks that you didn't have any luck with the two you bought.

The Maybelline Falsies made my lashes flop and irritated my contact lenses. The only thing they did for me was lengthen my lashes like crazy.

    1. ...were your doodles as bad as mine...or are our doodles epic? I CANT TELL

YAY for Tarte's stains working for you! They did reformulate them though, so maybe they got it right this time! I'll probably find an alternate use for these eventually!

  18. ahaha i love that drawing!! at first glance i wondered... did vanessa just draw a scene from the lion king?? hehehe :D but seriously tho how did you draw your header? what program did you use? i found an ipad ap that sort of makes me use it like a tablet for sketching, now i just need to look for a stylus. anyway i also didn't like falsies that much. well at first i was wowed by the length it gives but its to CLUMPY and uncomfortable.

  19. Omg...LOL, I'm sorry but that bunch of swatches does look really really crap! I'm sorry to hear that the blush sticks were good but aren't going to work for you in the summer! I'd really probably love that quad if it was anything like what it looks like in the pan! I'm actually a huge fan of that mascara but Im using the japan version of that exact one and it has fiber...I dont know if the american one has? Well, I'm glad you've recognized the products that don't work for you! It's always good to organize!

I would look like a panda...on the good days. Because I would spend my time rubbing my eyes because that thing was itchy like there was no tomorrow.
